Storage Area Network
A
Storage Area Network (SAN) is a network of storage devices and hosts connected
to each other through a fibre
channel switch or switches. The advantage of having storage designed as a
network is that it allows each host computer to have direct access to storage
without first going through a server.
When a host computer retrieves information from a storage device in a
SAN, the request is routed through a switch. A switch can be thought of as a
sophisticated switchboard where connections from one port to another are
managed.

Need for Storage & Growth of Data Types of Storage
Storage has become a
necessity. Information that we acquire everyday has to be stored. MP3s, photos,
videos, emails and documents needs storage capacity. In the past, we store our
information in diskettes and our hard disks. However, due to the increasing
requirement for storage capacity, our storage devices seemed not to accommodate
our needs. In the event that we require extra storage capacity, we have to
store our data in separate floppy disk or may even have to buy additional hard
disk to store our information.
With the introduction
of CD-ROMs and ZIP disk, these devices provide greater storage capacity. Still
other factors such as cost of scaling the storage capacity needs to be taken
into consideration.
In the following
slides, we will explore ways and means to increase storage capacity at the
lowest cost possible, to allow accessibility and managing the storage.
